The South Dakota State Library's Digital Collections reflect the history and culture of South Dakota.  Primarily of interest to librarians, researchers, and genealogists, our digital collections include newspaper articles, photographs, state documents, and more.

South Dakota Elk brochure
South Dakota Elk
“Elk once ranged over all of South Dakota, from the tall-grass prairies in the east to the Black Hills in the west. The first known records of elk in South Dakota are from the Lewis and Clark expedition (1804-1806), which encountered elk at several sites along the Missouri River. The opening of the frontier changed that forever.”- Excerpt from pamphlet
