American Indians in Children's Literature - 2018 Best Books

Are you looking for recently published books about Native people to add to your collection? AICL’s has begun their list of recommendations and will continue to add more as they review each title published in 2018. The categories include comic and graphic novels, board books, picture books, middle grades and high school. The titles include books that have been written by Native and non-Native authors and often include Native language along with English.

American Indians in Children's Literature: Best Books of 2018.

The titles can be used as resources to model effective ways to encounter unfamiliar languages. Teach humility by explaining that you (the reader) may not know the way of communicating portrayed in the book, but you are willing to learn. The reader respects the language by showing that it is worth knowing more about, and curiosity can be demonstrated by discussing what characters are saying in the languages the reader may be unfamiliar with.
