Water from the Madison Limestone and underlying rocks might supply, at least on a temporary basis, a large part of the water required for coal development. The Madison Limestone Project was established to determine the quantity and quality of water in rocks of Paleozoic age in an area of about 200,000 square miles in eastern Montana, western North Dakota and South Dakota, northeastern Wyoming, and a small part of northwestern Nebraska. -- Excerpt page B1
