The original South Dakota State Constitution

Every year during the South Dakota legislative session, there are bills and resolutions that mention the South Dakota State Constitution.

The constitution has changed over the years as revisions are approved, and the SD State Library has many copies of our state constitution.

Prior to the 2021 legislative session, the State Library received many requests for the original South Dakota State Constitution from citizens, attorneys, and state agencies.

The digitization team at SDSL decided to digitize the original version. It can now be found online at the South Dakota State Library: Digital Collections.

The document was extracted from the Journal of the Constitutional Convention of South Dakota, July 1889.

The Library. A Third Place.

The ALA Office for Diversity, Literacy, and Outreach Services published a short article titled "The Rise of Third Place and Open Access Amidst the Pandemic - Advocacy, Legislation & Issues".

In her article, Emma Wood emphasized the library as a third place. She noted that libraries across the country have stretched into virtual third places during the pandemic. Wood also explains the move to more Open Access (OA) resources and indicates that this shift provides for more equity especially for under-funded libraries.

2021 SD Legislative Session kicks off January 12

South Dakota will usher in the 2021 96th Legislative Session on Tuesday, January 12th. The first week will include the traditional State of the State, State of the Judiciary, and State of the Tribes messages.

The SD Legislature website, sdlegislature.gov, has all of the information you need to know about current and historical legislators, House and Senate bills, session calendar, and a current list of SD Laws and Administrative Rules.
